3 Things to Know About Falls

September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month. Each year, we use this time to revisit this topic. Injuries from this event can affect many people, but senior citizens are at a higher risk. There is good news, though. There are a few things you can do, starting today, to help a senior loved one. Once someone falls, there is an increased risk of another event.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the chance of falling again doubles after a first fall. We take this statistic seriously at The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists. What is more concerning about this detail is many older Americans fail to tell their family members and doctor. Without this information, loved ones may not know their increased risk of taking another tumble.

If you are starting to feel overwhelmed about the future of falls, we are here to help. Today we are sharing three ways to reduce your risk. It starts at home, and it can take a team. Follow along for our suggestions.

Know the risk

If you are over 65 or caring for someone in this age range, we want you to know the risk. With this knowledge, take steps to strengthen your bones. Add more calcium-rich foods to your diet, take walks to enjoy vitamin D, and keep your doctor in the loop about any feelings of dizziness. Beware of medication side effects.

Know your house

Are there any dangers lurking around your home? From sharp corners to slippery rugs, there are more trouble spots at home than you think. Start with light. Add nightlights to bathrooms, kitchens, and hallways. Then, remove clutter to make walking easier. If you or a loved one has to navigate furniture, rethink your layout.

Know the emergency

We don’t take falls lightly. If one occurs, call the doctor. It doesn’t matter if you think there is an injury; always call the doctor. For some people, the initial fall may not reveal an injury until later. More than ever, it is important to seek medical advice. According to the CDC, one out of five falls can lead to broken bones or another serious injury like a head injury.
