Why Are My Feet & Ankles Swelling?

Severe swelling in your feet can become so uncomfortable just putting your shoes on causes pain. Swelling in the extremities can occur from seemingly innocuous activities like taking a long car ride, plane, or bus trip. Periodically stretching your legs will often improve circulation and decrease swelling and tingling sensations. Swelling can also be from a systemic disease like diabetes or, as a medication side effect, so be sure to see your foot doctor for the proper diagnosis and care.

Some common causes of swelling in the feet and ankles include:

●    Edema (fluid retention)—Fluid retention in the feet and ankles tends to increase with age. Too much sodium in the diet can increase this retention, and conditions like arthritis can exacerbate the tendency.

●    Obesity—Carrying around extra pounds increases the stress and pressure on your feet and ankles and can interfere with proper fluid removal.

●    Medication interactions—Certain medications, such as some of those prescribed for high blood pressure, can cause fluid buildup in the feet and ankles.

●    Circulation abnormalities—Artery problems like PAD (peripheral artery disease) that reduce blood flow can contribute to fluid retention in the feet.

●    Foot and ankle injuries and sprains—Common injuries like a sprained ankle, even when not severe, can cause considerable swelling and ankle pain.
