Relationship Advice for Couples During Quarantine

The seemingly unending stress of financial insecurity, crowded living quarters, work issues, and fears of getting sick or making others ill is a tremendous burden for everyone and is really taxing for personal relationships to say the least. Keeping even keeled under the stress of all these challenges is essential.

Some essential advice for couples during quarantine includes the following:

  • Have a regular date night—While going to a nice restaurant and movie theater may not be an option right now (although drive-in theaters are making a comeback!), it’s important to carve out at least an hour or two per week to spend together. You can dress up and have a date in the backyard or on the balcony. Try to have light, humorous, and optimistic conversation to help step away from the stress caused by the pandemic and reconnect.
  • Be kind—During this stressful time it can be difficult to put your best foot forward, so everybody needs to cut each other some slack when the tension inevitably rises.
  • Give each other some space—Try to be understanding when your partner needs some alone time to listen to music, read, or play video games to burn off steam. If you can work from home, make sure each of you has a little dedicated space to focus and organize.
  • Try to stick to a daily routine—With the chaos we are all experiencing, it can be helpful to establish a daily routine to regain some sense of control of your life and to feel more grounded. Setting aside specific times for meals, leisure activities, family, and alone time will help dissipate anxiety and stress, especially when kids are involved.
