4 Signs Your Feet Are Well Loved this Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is all about the people you love, and that includes yourself. Since your feet are the things that actually carry you throughout the day, we at Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists wonder if you’ve been taking care of them. Here are 4 signs that you are treating your feet right and that they are in peak condition.
Smooth and Hydrated Skin
One of the most obvious signs of a hygienic and well-cared-for foot is the state of your skin. If you look at your heels and see smooth, supple skin instead of deep cracks, calluses, wounds, corns, or blisters, you are doing a great job. Healthy skin acts as a protective barrier against bacteria and fungus.
While a little bit of callus is normal, skin that is dry or scaling can be a sign of neglect or even a hidden fungal infection.
Strong and Clear Toenails
Take a look at your toenails. Are they clear, pinkish, and relatively thin? That is exactly what you want to see. Well-loved nails are trimmed straight across to prevent the heartbreak of an ingrown toenail.
If your nails have a healthy shine and lack any yellow, crumbling, or thickening, it’s a sign that your circulation is good, your hygiene is on point, and you likely aren’t deficient in any nutrient or vitamin.
Good Muscle Tone and Flexibility
A strong foot is all about the muscles that support your arches. If you can wiggle your toes freely and fan them out, then you have good intrinsic muscle strength.
You should also be able to flex your foot upward and downward without a tight or pulling sensation in your calves. This flexibility means you are less likely to suffer from strains or sprains.
A well-loved foot is a mobile one, so if you can move through your full range of motion without any odd sensations or clicking sounds, your feet are likely able to withstand the demands of sports and other activities.
Even Wear Patterns on Your Shoes
Believe it or not, your favorite pair of shoes can tell the story of how much you love your feet. Flip your shoes over and look at the soles. If the wear is relatively even across the ball of the foot and the heel, your gait is balanced.
When you have a healthy, strong stride, you aren’t putting unnecessary stress on one specific joint or tendon. This even wear pattern is a sign that your muscles and ligaments are working in harmony to support your body weight.
