Put Safety First When Visiting a Nail Salon

When you go to a nail salon for a pedicure, you look forward to bringing home 10 beautifully polished nails. What you probably don’t expect is a foot or toenail problem like a fungal infection from a salon with less-than-acceptable sanitation procedures.

Remember – you are the customer! You have the right to make sure that proper sanitary procedures are followed, for your health and safety. Just think about a similar situation if you visit a restaurant that had failed food safety inspections. Would you eat there?

Nail Salon Safety Checklist

Before even leaving your home for a salon visit, read online reviews and avoid those businesses with poor ratings in sanitation.

At your chosen salon:

  • Look around – it is clean?
  • Are current salon and technician licenses posted?
  • Are the technician’s hands and nails squeaky clean?
  • Are your instruments taken from a newly-opened and sterile package?
  • Are disposable accessories like buffers and toe separators taken from an unopened package?

Try to get an early appointment when the salon equipment is cleanest. Wear your own flip-flops and, if you have them, bring your own pedicure instruments. Remember not to shave your legs for 24 hours before your appointment.

Watch for a Fungal Infection

You may, despite all your precautions, take home a skin or toenail fungus. These fungi are very contagious. You’ll notice redness, itching or pain anywhere on your feet or toenails.

Whether a nail infection or other foot problem, please contact us with any concerns.
