Are Your Feet Ready for the Race?
There is marathon training, and then there is race day. Whether you are a first-time runner or an experienced one, foot care remains an important part of the process. Caring for your feet is something that prepares you for the big race day while also protecting you from potential injuries.
While you pick out your gear for race day or begin training for the next one, remember these important ways to treat your feet. Focus on these conditions: calluses and corns, ingrown toenails, and blisters. Whether you are running a few miles or 26.2 miles, follow our advice to get the most out of your run. The doctors at The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists are here to cheer you on during training and on race day.
Calluses and corns
Calluses may seem annoying, but they are your body’s way of protecting your skin. The thickened, hardened skin develops over time in response to friction. They don’t usually cause pain, so that’s a win for runners. However, if they thicken over time, they can impact how well your socks and shoes fit.
Corns have a similar root cause, but they have physical differences. A corn has a visible center, it may also be tender and uncomfortable. Cushions and padding are helpful when seeking relief. Corns can form around the heels and on top of or between your toes. If the corn becomes a wound, it can become infected. Keep the area clean and protected.
Toenails
Of course, we will talk about toenails. Did you know that toenail damage is more common than you think for runners? Some people may even lose a toenail during training. It can take months for it to grow back. If you want to prevent toenail troubles like ingrown toenails, follow these recommendations:
- Trim nails properly
- Wear shoes with a roomy toebox
- Keep your feet clean and dry
Blisters
Blisters are fluid-filled pockets that form in response to excessive friction. They can become painful as they rub against the inside of your shoes. Never pop a blister; instead, keep it protected, clean, and dry. To prevent blisters:
- Wear clean, dry socks with shoes
- Change shoe style or shoe size
- Monitor common problem areas
