Winter Vacation Woes

Yikes! Were you expecting your winter vacation weather to be this cold? If you’re traveling to the slopes, make sure you’ve planned from head to toe. The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists know that we often think about how many hats we’ll need or gloves, but have you thought about your foot needs, too? We’re here to help you pack the right way. If you have diabetes, there’s a special list for you, too. We often think about our patients and the many aspects of their lives. Travel is one, and we’re here to help with that too.

Pull out your suitcase, and jot down these notes. It’s time to plan for your winter vacation. With our help, we hope you can have your best vacation yet. The list is just the beginning, but we hope it gets you started. Consider who is joining you for your trip and how long you will be away from home.

There’s no need to overpack. We encourage you to pack the right things the first time. Who wants to deal with the hassle of finding what they need in another city or state?

Packing with diabetes

If you’re one of the many people with this condition, consider these items:

· Blood sugar tracker

· Diabetic socks

· Custom orthotics

· First-aid kit for cuts

· Lotion or medicated ointment for dry skin

Packing with small children

To avoid surprises, here are a few things that can help the littlest ones on the trip:

· Kid-friendly first-aid kit

· Hand warmers or feet warmers

· Extra layers to avoid overheating

· Chapstick or lip balm of choice

· Slippers or favorite socks from home

Packing with senior citizens

Care for the older family members on your trip. Consider these items:

· Walkers or other assistive devices

· Night lights in case the hotel has poor lighting

· Small snacks to avoid skipping meals

· Easy-to-use first aid kit

· Medication and medical information

Even with all of these things, accidents happen. While on vacation, we’re always a phone call away. We’re happy to recommend the next steps, and we hope the fixes are simple so that you can continue your winter trip. Knowing the health status of everyone on the trip is essential. Details include medication details and supply information. Refill prescriptions before a trip. Lastly, safely store contact information. Include information for pharmacies and doctors, from primary care physicians to podiatrists.
