Limb Loss and Foot Ulcers
We talk about diabetes quite a bit because it is a condition that can have serious complications. One of those complications is the loss of a limb. For podiatrists, this means the loss of a toe, a foot, or a part of the lower leg.
This month is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month. If you know someone who has experienced this type of loss, we hope you support them each day and celebrate their accomplishments. There is one statistic that we’ll share today. Eighty-five percent of foot ulcers preceded a lower-limb amputation.
Unfortunately, a foot ulcer is a common concern for patients who have diabetes. Left untreated, it can become an infected ulcer. As inspection spreads without treatment, the risk of losing a limb increases. If you have diabetes, The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists want to help you lower your risk by sharing ways to spot a foot ulcer and act fast. Before we get started, here is a recap:
- A foot ulcer is another word for a wound
- Foot ulcers can develop on the bottom, top, or side of the feet
- Foot ulcers can be painful and become infected
- Daily foot inspections are the key to spotting signs early
- Patients with neuropathy, or nerve damage, may not know they have a wound
Peripheral neuropathy is a common concern. As nerve damage impacts a patient’s ability to feel pain, they could potentially be walking around with an untreated wound for some time. While someone without nerve damage may quickly detect that they have a wound, a patient with neuropathy may not have the same response time.
