Freiberg’s Disease: A Rare Pain

Freiberg’s disease occurs when you have flattened spots on your feet. It will affect your mobility and can cause extreme pain in your feet and toes. It is a rare but debilitating condition. It progresses to the metatarsal heads in the ball of your feet. It happens when your blood supply to the toes isn’t happening correctly, and the toes tissue becomes weak, or it could happen when you get injured. It often occurs in sporting injuries. While it happens most often to women, especially those at a younger age, it can affect anyone.

How to Treat Freiberg’s Disease

After having the condition properly diagnosed, including imaging and other tests, you will begin the treatment process. This may include one or more of the following:

Wearing a boot–the boot will immobilize your foot taking the pressure off of it, so the bone can begin the healing process.

Medication–medication will relieve the pain. Your podiatrist will recommend the proper anti-inflammatory medication so that you have less discomfort during the healing process.

Custom orthotics-These devices may become necessary to address your foot’s particular needs. They are customized specifically for your foot, or feet. They are often prescribed to decrease pain, create improved stability, and most importantly, help you keep your mobility.

Avoiding tight shoes–properly fitted shoes will help your condition, while improper footwear will cause nothing but damage and pain. Avoid high-heeled shoes in particular. It would be best to have shoes that offer comfort, and tight shoes can’t do that.

Surgery–if all else fails, your podiatrist may recommend surgery to help the bone and your foot.
