Are Blisters Becoming a Problem?

Why do you keep getting blisters? Before we answer your question, here’s a fact: They form to help the body repair damaged skin. The top cause is friction. If you see a fluid-filled bubble on your toes, heels, or even the sides of your feet, follow along for more information. Friction is the cause of many other foot problems, including corns and calluses. Today, we’re breaking down blisters.

If you notice that blisters return, do you find them in the same space? The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists will ask you a question like this during our visit. We want to understand if there is a problem area, and then we’re going to find a way to fight back against friction. For patients with a recurring problem, here are three ways to avoid them:

Find the right size

Friction is a problem if your shoes are too big — or too small. Your pinky toe may be rubbing the inside of your too-small shoe. If you have too much space in your shoe, sliding is happening inside your shoe. Each of these motions causes problems.

Keep your feet clean and dry

Have you heard this advice? It’s a tip that podiatrists often share. Moisture is a problem for creating an environment for fungal infections and also an ingredient for friction. Allow your shoes time to dry. Always wear clean, dry socks.

Pad up for prevention

If you have a spot on your foot that always seems to welcome blisters, take a few steps to be proactive. Add a cushion or a protector to help, just in case one develops by surprise. Then, contact your podiatrist. There are many options for keeping your feet blister-free.

If you think you have a blister, we encourage you to keep it clean — and leave it alone. A common consequence of popping one is causing an infection. If you need to be near your blister, wash your hands thoroughly each time. Allow it time to heal and provide cushion and padding while you wait.
