Swimming Pools and Fungal Infections

Who doesn’t love a nice swim in the pool? From the youngest paddlers to seniors enjoying water aerobics, many people enjoy a swim, and its benefits. The activity is a low-impact option for moving more and improving circulation. Did we mention that swimming is also a fun way to stay cool on the hottest of days?

We can keep sharing the fun parts of swimming, but let’s talk about some dangers lurking around pools. It can be easy to let your guard down when you’re in the fun zone. Unfortunately, a few wrong moves can lead to a trip to the podiatrist. The doctors at The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists are bringing them to your attention again.

Pools can be slippery.

With all of the water in the pool, it’s easy to imagine what a splash or two can do to the surrounding walkway. The space around pools can be slippery. If you are not paying attention, you can slip and fall on the surface. You may also be at risk of slipping into the pool. When you’re outside of the pool, focus on keeping things dry.

  • Look before you walk
  • Wear pool shoes to help with traction

Pools can have fungus.

The pool environment is a dream vacation for fungi. Moisture and darkness are most attractive, and there is plenty at the pool and in surrounding locker rooms. If you are at the pool, keep these facts in mind. Be proactive and protect your feet.

  • Never walk barefoot
  • Never share pool shoes or foot hygiene tools

Pools can worsen wounds.

If you have a large open wound, choose another pool day. For patients with diabetes, we want you to use extra caution. Infection is a big concern for your care team, including your podiatrist. Allow your body time to heal.

  • Keep minor cuts cleaned and covered
  • Talk to your doctor about large wounds
