Skin Cancer and Your Feet
When you think about skin cancer signs, you may think your feet and ankles are the last to consider. Unfortunately, these are the areas people often skip during sunscreen application. More importantly, they could be missing key symptoms to help detect skin cancer early. After all, this form of cancer is one that you can see.
The doctors at The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists are bringing your attention to Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Melanoma Monday is the first Monday of May. Melanoma is the deadliest form of skin cancer.
If you are overwhelmed about where to look or what you could find, we are here to help. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to alert your doctor. It is important to examine your entire body. When looking at your feet, check soles, toes, and even your (unpolished) toenails.
Here are three ways to examine your feet to spot signs of skin cancer:
Memorize your moles
You may have one mole – or many. Regardless, these moles could be the early signs that something needs your attention. Remember the number of moles you have and monitor them regularly. Look for changes to their color, shape, size, and texture. If you develop a new mole, always contact your doctor.
Stick to your ABCs
There is an easy way to stay on task during your skin inspection. Follow these simple categories to guide and help you determine when to call your doctor. These are the ABCDEs for spotting melanoma. Learn more here.
A – asymmetry
B – border
C – color
D – diameter or dark
E – evolving
Ignore the myths
Skin cancer can affect anyone. Please wear sunscreen to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Many people are undiagnosed because they believe skin cancer only happens to certain people. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, “If you have skin, you can get skin cancers.” We encourage you to learn more about your skin type and check with family members about their skincare history.
We are here to help you determine your onext steps should you find something new on your skin. We encourage you to inspect your feet daily and check your skin from head-to-toe monthly. The time you take could save your life.
