The Right Way to Trim
Before your next toenail trimming session, think about how confident you are with your clippers. Do you know how often to clip, or which clipper to use? Considering these questions can help you prevent one common toenail trouble: ingrown toenails. We always encourage our patients to take time for their foot hygiene, and this step is no different.
The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists want to walk you through a few basics to understand before trimming. When you visit our office for an appointment, we are here to check-in and see how things are going at home, too. For patients with diabetes, the wrong type of trim can mean a surprise trip to the podiatrist.
An ingrown toenail happens when the toenail begins to grow into the skin. It can make the surrounding skin red and swollen. If the nail breaks the skin, there is an additional risk of the area becoming infected.
Follow these trimming tips to stay ahead of toenail troubles:
Choose the right kind of clippers
Did you know there are different clippers for your fingernails and toenails? Toenail clippers are much larger. You need a tool to handle thicker, broader nails. Never use scissors or other sharp objects that haven’t been approved for toenail trimming.
Clip at the right time
Don’t clip your toenails too often. On the other hand, don’t wait until they have grown too long either. If nails are too short, there is the risk of ingrown toenails. If they are too long, there is the risk of snagging them or tearing them during movement. Runners can regularly experience this problem without proper maintenance. Experts suggest cutting your nails every six to eight weeks.
Close the session with filing
Are you underestimating the value of a good nail file? After trimming your nails properly, which means cutting them straight across, bring out the file. Filing helps to smooth out any remaining edges that may be jagged. Remember, avoiding snags and tears for your nails is a best practice for healthy nails.
Are you cutting your nails with confidence? We hope this list provides a bit more reassurance. Keep your clippers clean and your nails clean, too. We’re here to answer any questions.
