Neglecting Toenail Fungal Infections Can Be Risky

One might be alarmed to know how common and widespread fungal toenails are. Fungi thrive in dark, warm and moist places, making your feet prone to increased risk as they are closed in shoes. Sometimes the fungi just reside on your skin without causing any issues. However, they can infect your nails and nail bed, making them irritated, unpleasant, unsightly, and sometimes odorous.

A person can catch a fungal infection in several different ways, like walking barefoot in public showers, locker rooms and swimming pools. However, your local nail salons are the most common yet least likely suspected cause of getting a toenail fungus infection. Most nail salon customers get severe infections from contact with dirty and contaminated equipment, which can only be treated with antibiotics or even surgery.

Those with nail fungus may notice the following symptoms:

  • Nails change color. You could first just notice a little discoloration, but if left untreated, this might expand and affect the entire nail. Eventually, all toenails could start changing color and begin thickening in texture.
  • The texture of your nails becomes thick, uneven and flaky.
  • The nail becomes loose and detaches itself from the base.
  • When a nail goes white, its surface may feel powdery, dry, and soft.
  • The nail starts to break or crack in various places.

Toenail fungus can cause other issues with your feet if you have diabetes. If you suffer from diabetes or a compromised immune system, you shouldn’t utilize home treatments for toenail fungus. For the best course of action, speak with your podiatrist.

  • For the treatment of mild-to-moderate toenail fungus, over-the-counter medicines may be more beneficial than prescription drugs.
  • As opposed to topical prescription drugs or oral systemic antifungals, home treatments may take longer to eliminate toenail fungus. Results might not become apparent for several months.
  • Stop bacteria from spreading by washing your feet regularly and keeping them dry. Wear good quality socks if you plan on wearing shoes. Make sure you switch shoes to allow the accumulated sweat to dry out before exposing your feet to more risk. There is no better time to check in about foot inspections.

Pain and permanent toenail deterioration may result from severe toenail fungus. Consult a podiatrist for diagnosis, treatment and care.
