Holiday Season Injuries
Crunch! Uh oh.
The sound of a crunch can mean a few things, and sometimes it’s not a good sound. Did you step on an ornament or a piece of leftover glass from an earlier accident? Whatever you do, stop, look, and make the right move. Face it — holiday decorations can go up pretty early, and they can stay around for a while, too. Around this season, use caution while walking around your house.
The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists are here for you during the holiday season and beyond. To help you prevent a holiday visit to the podiatrist, here are some ways to protect your feet at home. If you have guests coming over, share these tips with them, too.
Socks on
From glitter to Christmas tree pieces to leftover decorations, there are a few things that may still be on the floor. Wearing socks is one of the best ways to protect your feet from a surprise scratch. For patients with diabetes, a holiday scratch can turn into something worse. To add another layer of protection, switch to non-slip slippers. Wear socks to protect your feet from injuries but also keep them clean.
Lights on
Are you going downstairs for a nighttime snack? If your favorite leftovers are there, it may be worth your 3 am snack run. Be careful, though. Missing a step or not spotting something in the middle of the floor can lead to a foot injury. From ankle sprain to a bump or bruise, prevent a trip with extra lighting. We want to raise awareness about ways to prevent falls year-round. Clear the clutter and leave some lights on, even if just a night light.
Awareness on
One of the biggest mistakes to make during the holiday season is to delay treatment. Who wants to leave during the middle of the fun to visit the doctor? While it may seem like a temporary inconvenience, checking on an injury is worth your time. Ankle sprains, for example, are among the most commonly untreated injuries. Unfortunately, some consequences can linger into the future — from weak ankles to arthritis. Enjoy the holidays, but keep daily foot checks on your list.
