Prevent Unsightly Corns on Your Feet

Corns occur in both men and women of any age. They appear as hard, thick layers of skin that will happen when you have created friction and pressure on specific areas of your foot. While corns aren’t pretty to look at, they generally will not cause you pain, and they are reasonably easy to remove. In fact, in many cases, once you change the behavior causing the corns, you will notice they disappear pretty quickly.

How to Treat Corns

  • Custom orthotics–if you have a foot deformity, your podiatrist will prescribe custom orthotics to prevent the friction that causes corns.
  • Skin trimming–your podiatrist will be able to trim the excess skin with a scalpel to improve comfort. However, it’s important not to do this yourself. That is especially true if you have diabetes because it can lead to an infection.
  • Medication–there are medicated patches that work well on corns that your physician can prescribe as well. They will tell you how often to change the patch and ensure that you experience no discomfort in the process.
  • Surgery–occasionally, a corn may lead to surgery. Generally, the procedure is quick and straightforward.

If you have diabetes, you do need to be careful. As you may already know, you are at a higher risk of experiencing corns and calluses. Any foot injury can be problematic and can lead to infection. You should see a podiatrist right away and then regularly. Never try to address foot issues by yourself. Always consult your podiatrist, experienced professionals here to help you.
