Tread Carefully to Avoid Falling
Falling can be a frightening thing. As we get older, we become more susceptible, and it can become more dangerous if we are not careful. Health conditions, hearing, and vision, also play a part. So how can we have the ability to stop ourselves from falling? No worries! With these tips, you will be able to stay on the move!
- Do not rush—when you have been sitting for a while, don’t rush getting up. Go slowly. In doing so, you ensure that you don’t experience a profound drop in blood pressure, become dizzy, and topple over.
- Be careful with slippery areas—water or ice on the ground is slick. It helps to have sand or salt spread on these areas to make them easier to navigate. If you are alone and cannot find assistance, go around it, slowly.
- Wear the proper shoes—find non-skid shoes with low heels and rubber soles. They will support your feet while ensuring that you aren’t sliding. Select footwear on which soles are not overly thick or too thin. If you have foot issues, your podiatrist may recommend custom orthotics.
- Avoid stairs—if you are in socks, loose-fitting slippers, or a shoe with a smooth sole, do not attempt to walk on stairs or the floor. They may slide and cause a fall.
- Use walking assistance equipment—if needed, use a cane or walker to help you get around. Your doctor will make sure it is the right size and works appropriately. Wheels on a walker should roll smoothly. The rubber tip on a cane should be inspected for wear and replaced as needed.
