Caring for Children’s Feet

Did you know that while children’s feet develop most rapidly in the early years, the shape of their feet keeps changing throughout their lives? Therefore, it is crucial they wear well-fitted and supportive footwear, so their feet develop and grow in a healthy manner.

As babies’ feet are quite delicate, ensure their shoes have enough room for them to kick and stretch out. Most foot problems adults face link to early development issues or issues that build up over time.

Here are some useful tips to take care of your children’s feet:

  • Toddlers who just started walking will have an unstable walk and gait problems, like they may be walking on their toes or pointing them inwards. While this should change over time, if it doesn’t, consult your podiatrist.
  • Make sure their shoes are comfortable and are of the correct size. Shoes that are too tight or too big will cause problems like bunions, hammertoes, ingrown toenails, blisters and increase their chances of trips and falls.
  • Shoes should have sufficient padding and a strong grip so children can walk easily and steadily. Consult your podiatrist to see if they require any extra braces or orthotic inserts to support the development of their feet and arches.
  • As children experiment with different sports, make sure they have the right shoes for the right activity. This will safeguard them against injuries and sprains.
  • Children outgrow their footwear rather quickly. It is essential their toes have ample space inside the shoes and are not bent against the interior of the shoes. So, change footwear periodically according to their size. Socks need to be upgraded as well as children grow.
  • Parents must remain observant regarding the activities of their children. If you notice they are avoiding walking, using their feet, or limping, you need to check their feet.
  • If your children complain of pain in their feet, don’t take it lightly. Foot pain can be experienced due to several reasons, so it is pivotal to get a proper diagnosis.
  • Tell your children about the importance of good hygiene. They should wash their feet daily and dry them thoroughly. Applying moisturizer will prevent dry skin, scratches, and cuts.
