Help With Hygiene

People sure do have some bad habits when it comes to podiatric health. Here’s a new one: According to a 2023 study involving more than 1,000 people worldwide, only 30% of respondents made the effort to switch their dirty socks for clean ones before they fell asleep!

Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists will leave the matter of whether you should wear socks in bed aside for a moment and focus on the obvious: Sweaty, dirty feet are at greater risk for fungal infections and bacterial complications, including athlete’s foot.

Clearly, the time is ripe for some helpful hygiene tips.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your feet are in top-notch condition, whether you’re a “socks-to-bed” type or not:

Daily Cleaning

You wouldn’t skip brushing your teeth, so don’t skip washing your feet. Use mild soap and warm water to cleanse your feet, paying extra attention to the soles and spaces between your toes.

    Dry Feet = Happy Feet

Dampness creates a breeding ground for bacteria and fungi, leading to unpleasant odors and the infections mentioned above. Don’t wear restrictive footwear like boots for more than eight hours, and avoid going sockless in moccasins or boating shoes. Consider moisture-wicking insoles.

    Trim and Tidy

Trim toenails straight across to prevent ingrown toenails. Be careful not to cut them too short; use a quality nail clipper and file to keep them neat and healthy.

    Moisturize Mindfully

Keep your feet hydrated with a moisturizing foot cream or lotion. Focus on the heels and other areas prone to dryness. However, avoid applying moisturizer between your toes, as excess moisture in this region can contribute to fungal growth.

    Sock Strategy

Wearing clean socks made of breathable materials, such as cotton, keeps your feet dry. Change your socks daily or more often if they become damp. And DON’T WEAR DIRTY SOCKS TO BED! Your feet deserve better!
