Decoding Fractures: A Foot & Ankle Field Guide

Your feet work hard, and like anybody with a full-time job, they can get a little stressed. Sometimes, however, said stress can become too much for them to bear, leading to fractures. Understanding the different varieties of fractures can help you recognize symptoms and seek prompt treatment.

Lace up your boots! We’re going to explore the most frequent fractures that we see at Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists, and by the time we’re done, you’ll know what to watch for, too.

The Ankle

When it comes to ankle fractures, these are the usual suspects:

  • Lateral Malleolus Fracture: This one claims the top spot, affecting the bony bump on the outside of your ankle. Expect swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking if this occurs.
  • Medial Malleolus Fracture: A painful fracture affecting the inside ankle bone; the symptoms of this fracture mirror those of the lateral fracture but with an inward tilt of the foot.
  • Bimalleolar Fracture: When both the lateral and medial malleoli break, it’s a real problem. Look for significant swelling, bruising, and severe pain.

For any chronic ankle pain, consider additional treatment beyond mending the fracture itself. Fortunately, we’ve got plenty of options to offer, including some that make use of the highest end technology currently available.

The Rest

While the ankle takes the limelight, other foot fractures deserve attention:

  • Lisfranc Fracture: This midfoot fracture affects the bones connecting the tarsals and metatarsals. It leads to serious pain, swelling, and an inability to put weight on the afflicted foot.
  • Fifth Metatarsal Fracture: The “Jones fracture” involves the long, thin bone on the outer side of your foot. Expect sharp aches on the top of the foot, especially when pushing off.
  • Calcaneus Fracture: This heel bone fracture is a major one, often caused by high-impact falls. Expect intense pain, swelling, and significant deformity of the heel.
