Is My Toe Broken or Just Sprained?
A stubbed, twisted, or crushed toe can make you wonder whether it is broken. Because fractures and sprains share many symptoms, the difference is not always obvious. Below, Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists explains what to look for and when a toe injury needs professional care.
What Is the Difference Between a Broken and Sprained Toe?
A broken toe involves a crack or break in a bone. A sprained toe occurs when the ligaments supporting a joint are stretched or torn. Either injury may result from stubbing the toe, dropping something heavy on it, twisting it during sports, or bending it beyond its normal range.
What Are the Signs of a Broken Toe?
Possible signs of a toe fracture include:
- Immediate or intense pain
- Significant swelling and bruising
- Difficulty walking or bearing weight
- Stiffness or limited movement
- A toe that looks crooked or out of position
- Pain concentrated over a specific area of bone
Being able to move or walk on the toe does not necessarily rule out a fracture. Some minor fractures still allow limited movement and weight-bearing.
What Does a Sprained Toe Feel Like?
A toe sprain can also cause pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking. However, the discomfort may be centered around the joint rather than directly over the bone. The toe may feel unstable or hurt when it bends, pushes off the ground, or moves in a particular direction.
A severe sprain can be as painful as a fracture, so symptoms alone may not provide a definite answer.
When Should You See a Podiatrist?
Seek prompt care if the toe appears deformed, the skin is broken, pain is severe, numbness develops, or you cannot bear weight. People with diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation should have injuries examined promptly.
A podiatrist may order an X-ray to determine whether a bone is broken. Treatment depends on the injury’s location and severity and may include immobilization, stiff-soled shoes, or other protection during healing.
