What Is a Tailor’s Bunion?

Most people know a bunion as the bump that develops near the big toe. But when a similar bump appears on the opposite side of the foot, near the little toe, it may be a tailor’s bunion, also called a bunionette.

At Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists in Tucson and Oro Valley, we help patients understand what causes these smaller bunions and how to keep them from making every pair of shoes uncomfortable.

Where Does a Tailor’s Bunion Develop?

A tailor’s bunion forms at the base of the fifth toe, where the little toe meets the long bone along the outside of the foot. The area may look red or swollen, and the little toe may begin angling toward the neighboring toes.

What Causes a Bunionette?

A tailor’s bunion is generally related to the structure and alignment of the foot. Some people inherit a foot shape that places more pressure along the outside edge. Flat feet, abnormal foot mechanics, or changes in the position of the fifth metatarsal may also contribute.

Narrow, pointed, or tight shoes do not necessarily create the structural problem, but they can make symptoms worse by rubbing directly against the bump. Like other bunions, a bunionette may become increasingly painful when footwear repeatedly compresses the toes.

How Is a Tailor’s Bunion Treated?

Treatment often begins with conservative measures. Wider shoes with a roomy toe box can reduce pressure, while padding may protect the irritated area from friction. Ice may help with temporary swelling when used safely, and activity changes may provide relief during a flare-up.

Custom orthotics may be recommended when foot mechanics contribute to the problem. Surgery is generally considered only when pain persists despite appropriate nonsurgical care, or the deformity significantly interferes with daily activities.

Do not assume that every bump beside the little toe is a tailor’s bunion. A podiatrist can examine the area and use imaging when necessary to confirm the diagnosis.
