Why You Shouldn’t Try to Remove Calluses and Corns on Your Own

Calluses and corns are common foot problems, especially for people who spend long hours standing, wear tight shoes, or have certain foot deformities. While these thickened areas of skin may seem harmless, trying to remove them at home can sometimes lead to painful complications.

At Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists, patients receive professional care for painful corns, calluses, and other conditions to help keep their feet healthy.

What Are Corns and Calluses?

Corns and calluses develop when the skin thickens in response to repeated pressure or friction. Calluses are usually larger, flatter areas of hardened skin found on the heels or balls of the feet. Corns are smaller and often develop on or between the toes.

Although they may start with minor irritations, they can become painful over time.

The Risks of DIY Callus and Corn Removal

Many over-the-counter products and online “home remedies” promise quick results, but self-treatment can easily go wrong.

Cutting the Skin

Using razors, scissors, nail clippers, or other sharp tools to remove hardened skin may lead to cuts, bleeding, and infection. Even small wounds on the feet can become serious, particularly for patients with diabetes or poor circulation.

Chemical Burns

Medicated corn pads and acid-based treatments may damage healthy surrounding skin. Some patients experience painful burns, irritation, or open sores after using these products incorrectly.

Infection Risk

Trying to dig out a corn or aggressively file down thick skin can create openings where bacteria may enter, causing foot infections

Missing the Real Problem

Corns and calluses are often signs of underlying issues such as bunionshammertoes, abnormal gait patterns, or improper footwear. Simply removing the thickened skin does not resolve the actual cause.

Safe Treatment from a Podiatrist

A podiatrist can safely trim painful calluses and corns while identifying the underlying cause. Treatment may include:

  • Custom orthotics
  • Padding or offloading techniques
  • Footwear recommendations
  • Treatment for bunions or hammertoes
  • Preventive diabetic foot care

If you have painful corns or calluses, avoid risky at-home treatments and seek professional foot care from the expert team at Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists.
