All About Orthotics
Is “orthotics” a mysterious term for you? If you think about the origin of the word, it will be easier to understand. The word “orthotic” is Greek and means to straighten or align. Orthotics are shoe inserts that can help relieve fatigue in your feet and also give them support and comfort.
Orthotics are not the same as the generic shoe inserts available at pharmacies and big box stores! Custom-made only for your feet, orthotics are specifically designed to treat your specific foot condition. Over-the-counter inserts may temporarily relieve foot pain, but cannot address any biomechanical concerns or chronic foot problems.
For athletes, whether enjoying sports or individual workouts, orthotics can help your performance because they can minimize soft tissue vibrations and even help to stabilize your joints.
There are two types of orthotics. Accommodative orthotics help relieve pain because they offer extra cushioning and support. Functional orthotics can solve foot and ankle motion problems such as faulty biomechanics.
Custom-Fitted Orthotics Can Tackle Many Foot Problems
At our practice, we prescribe orthotics to relieve the pain and discomfort of many different foot issues such as:
- Achilles tendonitis
- Arthritis
- Ball of the foot pain
- Bunions
- Calluses and corns
- Flat feet
- Foot pain
- Hammertoe
- Heel pain and heel spurs
- High arches
- Injuries
- Plantar fasciitis
- Sports injuries
- Tendonitis
Orthotics can be very helpful with children’s foot problems too, for example in-toeing or flat feet.
Crafting Orthotics Just for You
After diagnosing your foot issue and observing your gait, we will take a mold of your foot in our office. Unlike over-the-counter shoe inserts, custom-fitted orthotics are made of quality, durable materials like leather, rubber, plastic and other synthetic materials. With proper care, your orthotics will last for years.
Wearing your orthotics as directed can help ease knee, hip and back pain as well as relieve your foot discomfort.
