Don’t Let Haglund’s Deformity Keep You From Walking

Haglund’s Deformity is a rare condition, defined as the occurrence of a bony enlargement that appears on the back of your heel. Rubbing against shoes will cause this issue to affect the Achilles tendon and its surrounding tissue, leading to a new condition, bursitis. With these issues wreaking havoc on your foot, you will notice pain and swelling begin to show quickly. Thankfully, you can take simple measures to ensure that this condition has a lower chance of reoccurring.

How to Prevent Haglund’s Deformity

  • Choose the appropriate shoes—you will need a shoe that does not have a rigid backing on the heel. Choose either a backless shoe or one with a softer back instead.
  • Custom orthotics—in order to help you with mobility, your podiatrist may have you wear custom orthotics. They are specialized for your issues and help with control and movement as well.
  • Stretching—preforming the appropriate exercises will prevent your Achilles tendon from tightening further and causing future issues.
  • Know your limitations—with this condition, you will need to avoid running uphill or over hard surfaces, as it places an extreme amount of pressure on the affected area.

The pain of Haglund’s Deformity is that it is debilitating and it can affect your mobility. Avoid experiencing these issues and others by following these steps for preventive care. If these measures fail, see your podiatrist immediately as they can provide the treatment necessary to help your issue before it becomes worse.
