Common Causes for Neuropathy

Did you know more than 30 million people in the United States manage symptoms of peripheral neuropathy or nerve damage? Common symptoms include: burning, tingling, and numbness; loss of muscle strength; loss of balance; and persistent pain. If you have ever experienced these symptoms without receiving a diagnosis, it may be time to contact your podiatrist.

Many people are impacted by this condition due to a variety of causes that lead to a diagnosis of neuropathy. Can you name at least three?

The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists are here to get you started. Peripheral neuropathy can impact hands and feet. For podiatrists, we have a front-row seat to how it can negatively affect a patient’s daily routine.

Three common causes of neuropathy:

1-Diabetes

Yes, diabetes can be a cause of neuropathy. One of the ways diabetes becomes dangerous is when blood sugar levels go unchecked. As podiatrists on your care team, our job is to help you manage your diabetes. By checking in with us early, we can also help to spot early signs of neuropathy.

● Are you pre-diabetic or diabetic?

● How are your blood sugar levels?

● Is a podiatrist on your care team?

2-Injuries or trauma

Did you ever think that an injury could cause this condition? It’s true. Here’s the best way to reduce your risk: protect your feet and ankles. Wear shoes and other forms of support as often as you can. Nerve damage can be painful and treatment options vary.

● Do you know how to respond after an injury?

● Do you walk barefoot often?

● How do you protect your feet while playing sports?

3-Poor nutrition

There is always another reason to maintain a balanced diet. Poor nutrition could increase your risk of developing nerve damage. Think twice about how you add food to your plate. It’s OK to ask for help and connect with community resources.

● Seek out ways to connect with a nutritionist

● Avoid high-fat, sugary foods

● Eat lean meats and plenty of fruits and vegetables

There are more causes for neuropathy, but we hope this list got you started. Be mindful of your risk if you have diabetes, recently experienced trauma or an injury, and have poor nutrition habits. We’re here to help.
