Packing for College: A Podiatrist’s List
For a high school graduate who is planning to attend college, a trade school, or even military training, there is a packing list in your future. Do you know where to start? Of course, you know the obvious things about wardrobe, school supplies, etc. What about your feet? We want you to consider how you will care for your feet during the next chapter of your life. Now is not the time to ease up on your hygiene routine.
The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists can help you create your packing list. We know that you still have some time, but we want to share our reminders early in the process. Create a separate category on your shopping list for foot care essentials.
Here are our suggestions:
Shoes with support — and style, of course
If you play a sport, you may already have a shopping day planned for basketball shoes, football shoes, or even soccer cleats. With this recommendation, we’re talking about every day shoes, for walking around campus or new environment you will be entering.
● Shop for shoes with arch support only
● Only wear flip-flops for a short time
● If you need orthotics for more support, talk with your podiatrist
A new set of clean, sharp toenail clippers
We know this is a specific request, but it is one of the best ways to care for your feet. Trimming nails regularly makes shoe-wearing more comfortable. It also provides less opportunity for bacteria to begin growing.
● When you trim nails, trim straight across
● Don’t rip, pull or tear your nails
● If you think you have an ingrown toenail, visit a podiatrist
Contact information for a podiatrist
If you choose to start a new chapter away from home, it’s always helpful to have a starting point when you run into medical concerns. While we are sure you will arrange a local doctor, you should have a local podiatrist, too.
● Start with your primary care physician for recommendations
● Remember podiatrists help with prevention, too
● Don’t deal with foot pain alone; reach out soon
