Healthy Aging Month and Your Feet
We previously talked about Falls Prevention for September. Did you know there is another topic to discuss this month? September is also Healthy Aging Month. There are ways to age healthy and prepare for our golden years. Yes, our bodies and minds may change. What can we do today to strengthen our foundation?
The good news is some lifestyle changes can make your life healthier. The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists know how age can affect a patient’s feet and ankles. If they already have a condition like diabetes, all eyes will continue to be on their feet.
From ingrown toenails to fractures to dry, cracked skin, it is important to know the risk of conditions that affect seniors. Today, we’re sharing three ways to take steps to help you age well. Whether you are 65 and older or preparing for the future, we think everyone can benefit from these tips.
Start with your plate
Are artificial foods the go-to choice for meals? Can sugary drinks be the only solution to your cravings? Now is the time to make changes to mealtime. Add more fruits, vegetables, and water to your day. Stay away from foods with high cholesterol or processed sugar. Whole grains and lean meats are the way to go.
Keep calm and move on
Don’t stop moving. Exercising is one of the best ways to feel great mentally and physically. The movement helps to strengthen bones and muscles, which can also reduce the risk of a fall. We recommend adding about 30 minutes of physical activity to your day. Search for low-impact exercises such as water aerobics if you are concerned about injuries.
Make the appointment
Now is not the time to skip appointments. Each one matters — even if it feels like a maintenance appointment. Check-ups are valuable because they allow doctors to detect changes from previous visits. Early detection offers the best way to fight back against complications from conditions. We’re here to partner with you in your health. We invite you to bring questions to your appointment and join the conversation. Contact us today to get started.
