Do Custom Orthotics Wear Out?
Custom orthotics may be made specifically for your feet, but they are not designed to last forever. Daily pressure, changing activity levels, and normal wear can gradually reduce the support they provide, even when the devices still look usable.
At Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists in Tucson and Oro Valley, we help patients determine whether their orthotics still meet the needs of their feet, footwear, and activities.
How Long Do Custom Orthotics Last?
There is no single replacement schedule that works for everyone. How long a custom orthotic lasts depends on its materials, how frequently it is worn, your body weight, activity level, footwear, and the amount of pressure placed on it.
A runner or someone who stands throughout the workday may wear down orthotics faster than a person who uses them less frequently. Arizona heat can also be hard on materials when orthotics are left inside a hot car or exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.
What Are the Signs That Orthotics Need Attention?
Visible damage is one clue, but changes in comfort or support may appear first.
Watch for:
- Cracks, thinning, or flattened cushioning
- A worn or peeling top cover
- Warping or changes in shape
- Orthotics that slide inside your shoes
- Returning heel, arch, ankle, knee, or back pain
- New pressure spots or blisters
- Changes in your gait
- One orthotic wearing faster than the other
Can Your Feet Change Before Orthotics Wear Out?
Yes. Your foot structure and support needs can change because of aging, weight changes, pregnancy, surgery, injury, arthritis, or a new exercise routine. Children may also outgrow their devices as their feet develop.
An orthotic that remains physically intact may no longer be the best prescription if your symptoms, activities, or walking mechanics have changed.
Should Orthotics Be Repaired or Replaced?
Some devices can be refurbished with new padding or a replacement top cover. Others need to be adjusted or replaced. A podiatrist can examine the orthotics, evaluate how they fit inside your current shoes, and reassess your gait and foot structure. Learn more about how orthotic inserts may support your feet.
