Shop for Spring Shoes the Right Way
Spring is in the air — and it’s finally here. Are you preparing for spring sports? Whether you’re getting ready to hit the golf course or the track, it may be time for a new pair of shoes. While you may think the shopping trip should be quick, it always helps to be prepared before your visit. Are you falling for common shoe assumptions that could lead you to pick the wrong pair of shoes? We’re sharing a few traps to avoid.
The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists treat foot and ankle conditions, and wearing the wrong shoes is among the top causes of discomfort. Wearing the wrong pair of shoes while playing an active sport puts you at risk for an injury. We’re here to help you stay in the game this season.
Here are three common assumptions to avoid while shoe shopping:
I know my size.
Do you know much about the Brannock Device? Trust us. It’s worth your time. Before buying a pair of shoes, ask for help. Most shoe stores rely on the Brannock Device to help customers find an accurate size. We trust this device, and you can, too. Never assume your size or buy a pair of shoes without trying them on. It may surprise people how much a half-size difference can make in the level of comfort.
I will get used to the shoes.
Myth: It’s OK if your shoes hurt while you try them on at the store. Fact: Absolutely not! We encourage our patients to try another pair of shoes if they experience discomfort. Sometimes a switch of style or even brand can make a difference. Before you leave the store with a pair of shoes, ask yourself: Could I keep these shoes on for the rest of the day and be comfortable? Now, imagine playing a sport.
I used these shoes for another sport.
Each sport requires a specific type of shoe. While you may love your running shoes, they are not soccer shoes. Your basketball shoes are not for track and field. Ask your coach or instructor for recommendations. Shoes are created with the individual sport in mind. To avoid an injury, choose the shoes that match the sport.
