Ankle Sprains — and Taking Next Steps

As you’re driving the ball down the court, you know that this is about to be your best move yet. Then, something happens. Was it a twist, a roll, or a turn? Either way, something has happened to your ankle, and you’re going down.

Yikes!

You may have just experienced an all-too-common injury: an ankle sprain.

The Desert Podiatric Medical Specialists see athletes experience sprains quite often. Whether you’re new to a sport or playing for decades, sprains happen. With the awkward movement, you can tear the ligaments or tissues that hold your ankle bones together.

After the ankle sprain comes critical next steps. Choosing the right ones leads to proper healing. Skipping steps can lead to problems later down the line.

Step 1

Stop and call your doctor.

You may need someone to help you off the track, court, or field, and that is OK. Take all of the time you need to safely get to a place where you can REST. Taking pressure from your ankle as soon as possible is one of our top recommendations. Never push through the pain.

Step 2

Apply ICE and COMPRESSION.

Swelling and bruising may come along with the other symptoms. Apply ice and compression to help with the swelling. Compression also helps to stabilize your injured ankle. A bandage is a good start.

Step 3

ELEVATE your ankle to at least the level of your heart.

You have our permission to get comfortable on the couch. Use pillows and other soft supports to elevate your ankle. Elevation helps to limit swelling and bruising. There is no need to stay on the couch all day, but think about elevating your injury for a few hours daily.

Did you notice a theme here? R-I-C-E.

Yes, this is a common acronym that our doctors share with patients. If you think you have an injury, following these steps can start you on the right path to recovery. We always recommend immediately scheduling an appointment for a professional assessment and diagnosis. More than anything, plan to treat your injury. At-home care is great, but it is not a substitute for a visit to your podiatrist.
